Today I am formally beginning a new line of study within my work: Gravitas.
Gravitas is being developed as a discipline within Silent Monumentalism, a conceptual and visual framework I began developing in 2026. While Silent Monumentalism is concerned with presence, structure, silence, scale, restraint, and psychological weight, Gravitas will focus more specifically on how forms hold themselves, how space carries weight, and how material presence can create balance, pressure, and stillness.
At this early stage, Gravitas is not a finished style or a closed system. It is a field of study.
I will use it to investigate:
- balance
- space
- weight
- proximity
- silence
- material presence
- structural pressure
- voids
- grounded forms
- cantilevers
- platforms
- blocks
- architectural stillness
- objects that feel heavy, quiet, and controlled
The first questions I want to investigate are:
What makes a form feel grounded?
How close can two forms stand before tension appears?
Can empty space carry weight?
When does a void become structural?
How can an object feel quiet but still powerful?
How can a small object hold monumental presence?
Gravitas will become a way for me to test these questions through drawings, paintings, small sculptures, desk objects, wall pieces, product studies, architectural ideas, and written notes.
The first visual studies will follow in the near future. For now, this note marks the beginning of the investigation.
